Storm "Ondoy" update from Koleen French, Manila, RP
Posted: October 05, 2009Author: French Monday Sep 28 Dear Friends, Two days ago, Sat Sep 26, the Philippines was hit by tropical storm "Ondoy" ("Ketsana" is the international name). Below is an excerpt from an article taken from a local newspaper, along with photos taken from our home. During our House Church worship yesterday, we enjoyed singing "Father, You are King over the flood, I will be still and know You are God." (from the song, "Still.") The Wassell family, our dear friends and co-workers, came to join us briefly for worship. Other families that normally join us weren't able to get through the mud. We are doing fine. Bob, who might have been a weatherman if he hadn't become a missionary, predicted correctly that our house would flood, even though our area has never flooded since the subdivision (housing tract) was built. He and his feminine four Frenches hauled up stuff from our 1st floor to prepare for the possibility of a 3-ft flood. We flooded about 4 inches -- but hey, we were prepared! We were without water or electricity for a day. Now we have power, but poor water pressure, so we collect water early in the AM and at night. So far I haven't been able to do laundry. But at least we can take a dipper bath once a day. We are so blessed! Many others, including a number of families from Faith Academy, are without water and electricity. Filipino friends have homes that have flooded badly or even collapsed. Debbie (2nd daughter, 16 yrs old) pointed out that she could be cheerful and invigorated because we were all together. A number of families we know had members who were stranded and could not get home. The girls felt they got a holiday today because all schools in Metro Manila were canceled today due to impassable roads. We are all healthy and nothing was lost or damaged. When I was at my grumpiest during the actual flood, Junia (12 yrs old) said "Mama, I am so glad we live in a country where we can have adventures like this!" Please pray for those families, both missionary and Filipino, who have badly flooded houses and loss of property. We count it a privilege to be your representatives in the Philippines for Christ.
